Music and Me

About Me

Hello! My name is Quian Garces. I am a Sophomore and I am majoring in Music Therapy. My pronouns are he/him. I wouldn't normally mention my gender identity on an assignment, but for the sake of the section Music that is meaningful to me I felt it would be ok to mention it here (also because only like 4 people will be reading this lol).

My main instrument is the piano, I started learning the piano when I was around 10 years old, so it's been a long 9 years. When I was little, I watched A LOT of Big Time Rush and Victorious, and because of that I realized I wanted to be a famous singer like Ariana Grande. This did not work out for me. I do, however, love playing the piano and hope to bring good things to my future music therapy clients.

This is me and my dad, we took this picture after a day of fishing. I believe I was around 7 years old

Song I like...
What Am I To You
Rocco

I started listening to Rocco around June 2024. I enjoy his music a lot because it's music that I can listen to and relax. This song in particular is one of my favorites because I really like the lyrics as well as the overall calming music. I personally believe this song is great to daydream to or to listen to while drawing. THE LYRICS ARE SO GOOD PLEASE LISTEN TO THE WORDS AS WELL!!!! Rocco isn't my favorite artist ever but he is definitely one that I think deserves more attention!

Music that is meaningful to me...

Literally anything by Cavetown

I know what you're thinking.. "You're trans and you like Cavetown? Can you get any more generic??" YES I CAN. I've listened to Cavetown since I was 11, so just like every other trans kid, I based my entire personality off of him and other "cringe" things that I will not mention because I would like to keep my dignity. I don't listen to Cavetown as much as I used to, but I still occasionally listen to his music when I am having a bad day.

Cavetown

This is one of Cavetown's most well known songs, and although I don't like it as much anymore, I would listen to this on repeat in High School. During my time in middle school I would listen to the 2015 version of this song (which is probably more known that this 2019 version). Saying I was obsessed is an understatement, but it was during a time when I could only rely on music for comfort, so this song holds a special place in my heart for getting me through that part of my life.

Amor Prohibido
Selena Quintanilla

This song is important to me for a few different reasons. Before I ever even touched a piano I was a singer. I used to sing with my friends in the first grade until the third grade, and sometimes we would perform for our school. This was the last song I ever sang with my friends in the playground. I remember when I had my send off party, I sang this with them around 5 different times back to back, and my parents got mad at me because it was so repetitive. Although this song does hold good memories for me, it also holds the last bittersweet memory I had with some of my old best friends.

Song I don't like as much
Love Me Like You Do
Ellie Goulding

This song would play on the radio 24/7 and it would drive me insane. I actually really liked this song at first, but after hearing it way too many times I started to get tired of it. The problem is that, even though I was tired of the song, it still played on the radio, I simply could not escape it. It's not a bad song, I have just heard it enough times, and I do not want to hear it again.

Comments

  1. The instrumentation of the Rocco song is really dreamy sounding! The chimes were a nice touch, and I thought it was cool how it built up in energy but abruptly stopped. I also like the reverb in it too. Also the lyrics </3 I'm glad I've found someone else who is not a fan of Love Me Like You Do! I can never put my finger on why I don't like it, but I think it might because it was reallyyyyy overplayed.

  2. YESSS CAVETOWN!!! I also listened to his music throughout the entire beginning of my transition (2017-ish), I think it's a universal experience for all of us. This is Home got me through a lot of that time period also. I still listen to some of his early music, but will admit I haven't kept up with the recent albums. I really liked the Rocco song. Also, that's such a sweet memory for Amor Prohibido, thanks for sharing :).

  3. Hi Garces! I really like your setup for your blog. I don’t think it’s generic to like Cavetown because you’re trans. If you find identity or enjoyment in it, it isn’t cringy. I think it’s cool. Also, Cavetown’s music is super catchy. I also dislike Love Me Like You Do. It came out when I was learning to drive so it was always on the radio. I always changed the station when it came on.

  4. Hey Quian! I really enjoyed your blog and the sections of music that you chose. I would say Selena was someone we always listened to in my house. I would say I agree with the music you dislike, that song was way overplayed. I have not listened to Rocco before, but I would have to do some more listening because I really liked your selection.
